British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.
The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."
Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
